Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you have a book of your patterns?

A. No, the main reason being is that most of the patterns I make are from customer's own photographs, or specially designed graphics I have made for them, based on their requests, and are “one off”. You will find all my stock patterns here:http://www.latchhookrugs.com/patterns.shtml

Q. Do you have a catalog?

>A. No, the cost of producing a Catalog would radically increase the cost of my patterns, and I try to keep these as low as possible

Q. Do you supply materials?

A. No, I do not provide materials, but I do supply a complete list of materials required for the project, which includes: The number of packs of each color, the catalog number for same and the color description. The yardage of canvas you will need, and other incidentals such as binding, latch hook tool etc. I also qive you the approximate pricing for these materials and where to buy them.

Q. Can I buy kits from you?

A. No, I only supply patterns. You can purchase commercial kits from any of the suppliers on my “Links” page http://www.latchhookrugs.com/links.shtml

Q. I have a photograph/picture/graphic that is not copyrighted and I would like to make a rug up from it. How can I send it to you?

A. There are two ways, if you have it on your computer or can have it scanned you can just email it to me or you can just mail it to me : Kaye Knull, PO Box 67, Paradise CA 95967-0067 USA. If you choose to send via ordinary mail you have my assurance that it will be returned to you in the same condition I received it.

Q. Does the picture I send to you need to be very large?

A. No, I work with quite small images, the main criteria is that the picture be as clear as possible, and that the background doesn't overwhelm the subject. However the larger the better because I can always decrease the size and maintain quality, this is also handy if you want the photograph changed in any way.

Q. Is there a size limit on your patterns?

A. No, I can make patterns for any finished size rug you would like.

Q. Do you paint/color/dye the canvas with the design?

A. No, I supply the pattern in graph form on several sheets of paper (depending on the size of the pattern) and a layout map, so you know which page belongs where. This is a much more definitive way of hooking as it ensures you use the correct colors. Printed or stamped canvases, very rarely match the yarn colors and end up confusing a lot of people. For a small tutorial on how to hook from a graph, see here http://www.latchhookrugs.com/howto.shtml

Q. What's the difference between 3.75 and 5 mesh Canvas?

A. 3.75 and 5 mesh relate to how many holes per inch. 3.75 means there are 3.75 holes to the inch and 5 mesh = 5 holes to the inch. Therefore if you use a 5 mesh canvas you will use more yarn as the stitches will be closer together, it is also more expensive than 3.75 and only comes in certain yardages. It is great for really defining a design such as a floral. 3.75 canvas is totally acceptable and also provides definition, perhaps just not as intense as 5 mesh, but is certainly a lot less time consuming and is very cost effective.

Q. What's the difference between wool and acrylic yarns and why should I consider one over the other?

A. It's really up to you and what you expect of your rug. Acrylic is less expensive than wool and usually has more shades of various colors than wool, it can be washed (if it has been bound) and will last for quite a long time if not subjected to rough handling. If you are going to put your acrylic rug on a surface such as a polished wooden floor, then you really do need to apply a non-skid backing or cushion to it.

Wool on the other hand is a lot more durable and will last many life times. It can be hand washed and dried flat, but with normal care this shouldn't be necessary, usually just a good vacuum clean will bring it as good as new. Also, wool is a lot heavier than acrylic and is not prone to slipping

Q. I've never done a latch hook rug before where should I start to learn this craft?

A. Latch Hooking is probably one of the easiest crafts you will ever learn, and the results are pretty amazing. You can start with purchasing just a small kit from Walmart, or a simple pattern. After you have completed just a couple of rows, you will be “hooked”. Whether you purchase a simple kit or pattern just make sure you read the instructions first.

Q. Why won't you make patterns from Disney, NFL, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, Warner Bros. etc. logos or designs?

A. These companies/teams/sports etc own the rights to certain images and in some cases have licensed their use to others. I cannot use an image owned and protected by such an entity without express permission without becoming complicit to copyright laws. I cannot use those images to make a pattern without violating their copyright.
